How To Protect Your Car From Hail Damage

Blog

When there's enough wind to pull condensation high into the air, that water can freeze and turn into hail. Anyone who's ever been caught in a hailstorm knows how frightening it can be. Small pieces of hail are nothing to worry about, but hail can grow larger than the size of a golf ball; these large pieces of hail can cause injury and severe damage to cars. Here are three things you can do to protect your car from hail and minimize the damage it causes:

1. Get your car to cover.

If possible, get your car to cover when you know a hailstorm is approaching. Modern weather detection systems are very good, and you will often have advance notice of hailstorms. Put your car in your garage if that's an option. If you don't have a garage, you can minimize the damage by parking your car strategically. Park your car under large trees or awnings to offer it some protection. If there are no such features nearby, placing blankets or a car cover over your car can soften the impact of the hail.

2. Pull over if you're driving.

Sometimes you won't have advance notice. If you haven't been listening to the weather, you may get caught driving in a surprise hailstorm. If this happens to you, don't keep driving. Hail can cause your front or rear windshields to crack and chip. Large cracks can obscure your view and cause you to get into a car accident. Hail blown by the wind is also hazardous to your side windows. These windows are more susceptible to damage, and they may shatter and injure you in a hailstorm.

3. Fix any cracks immediately.

If your car was caught in a hailstorm, carefully inspect it once the danger has passed. Even small cracks and chips in your windshield can significantly weaken the auto glass. It's important that you get any flaws fixed at once. An auto glass repair service will be able to patch any cracks and chips, as long as they're smaller than a dollar bill and have not penetrated the glass completely. Most windshield repair services make house calls, so there is no excuse not to call for a repair as soon as you notice the damage.

Take good care of your car, and it will last you a long time. Your car can weather a hailstorm as long as you follow this guide. Remember that it's always better to err on the side of caution, and you should fix any auto glass damage right away.
