Tips For Protecting Your Car Windshield From Damage

Blog

Car windshields can be expensive to fix. Most car owners feel as though windshield damage is something that they can't control since windshield damage often happens at high speeds and unexpectedly. But there are some things that you can do habitually that will reduce your risk.

Don't Follow Other Cars Closely

The most significant cause of windshield damage is a rock being flung onto your windshield by another car. You can avoid this by staying back from the cars in front of you a bit. Making space isn't just a great way to protect your windshield -- it will also protect you from a potential collision in the event that the other car stops quickly.

Avoid Unpaved Roads and Road Work

Unpaved roads and areas undergoing construction are far more likely to have the loose stones and pebbles that inflict windshield damage. By avoiding these areas, you can greatly reduce the chances of getting your windshield broken. You should also exercise special care when you're driving after severe weather.

Try Not to Follow Larger Vehicles

Larger vehicles are far more likely to kick up stones and debris. Semi trailers, for instance, have more wheels on the ground and are using more force to move across the ground. The heavier the vehicle is, the more force that will be exerted upon the road. When on the road, you should make an effort to switch lanes if you find yourself behind heavy or industrial vehicles. If you can't switch lanes, falling back should help.

Don't Park Under Trees and Overhangs

To really protect your vehicle you may want to keep it in a covered garage or carport as much as possible. Parking under a tree or overhang just increases the chances that something could fall on your windshield, potentially damaging it. Something as small as an acorn can potentially damage your windshield if it falls from a high enough height. If you can't store your car in a garage, you can always cover it instead.

If your windshield does get damaged, don't panic. There are ways to repair a cracked windshield that don't necessarily require a full replacement. In fact, there are many mobile mechanic services and car glass services that can get a window re-sealed and fixed within a matter of hours. The most important thing is for you to do it as soon as possible. A cracked windshield will weaken over time and may eventually break apart entirely. Contact a company like A.C. Glass to replace your windshield if you find that's what you need to do.
